  Rezumat:  This paper critically reflects on the process of pursuing autonomy through a doctorate in anthropology and the recurrent institutional obstacles in the form of bureaucratic oversight committees and departmental politics that are set against this project. I argue against these trends by drawing from my own experience by self-reflectively describing the corporate bureaucratic conformity within the discipline of anthropology and retain an ongoing commitment to the left-wing project within the discipline itself and the promise of human freedom contained within the traditions of critical knowledge.
