  Rezumat:  From realism to postmodernism, the novel has undergone significant changes, both in form and content, but the question is whether the aesthetic requirements and conventions regarding the art of the novel have changed as well, and, if so, to what extent. In order to outline the development of the novel, I chose to examine the aesthetic status of fiction as defined by Henry James, who, at the end of the 19th century, sought to refine and strengthen the form of the novel, as a novelist, but also as a critic, and Jeanette Winterson, who has, more recently, embarked upon a similar endeavour.
