  Rezumat:  The present paper is an attempt to prove that the works of the above-mentioned authors are meant as portraits of the underclass or third-world component of the British community; it is centred on issues such as unemployment, racism or ethnicity. However, this does not mean it is restricted to them; in describing one component of a society, one subtextually refers as well to the other member of the relationship, namely the so-called "local community" of English speakers, with their sociologically analysable habits and responses to life stimuli.
