Rezumat:  The Nistru–Băiţa river system, north-western Romania, is subject to a still ongoing mining activity focussed on Au, Pb, Zn, and Cu ore extraction. The catchments belong to Romania’s main centre of polymetallic mining and one of the „hot spots” of significant pollution with metals. High concentrations of Fe, Al, Zn, Cu, Pb, as well as SO42- are found in the mining seepage as well as the receiving streams in whole mining area. Sulphate is a predominant ion in these environments, and its interaction with iron and aluminium and other metals and semimetals plays a central role in their speciation, solubility, and toxicity. Occasional treatments with Ca(OH)2 solutions obtained from lime, were applied to neutralize the acid water and precipitate Fe3+ as oxi-hydroxides together with toxic elements.
