Rezumat:  The Basis For Developing A Tourism Related Quality of Life Index. Hungarian and international literature on tourism pays considerable attention on the exploration of the societal impacts of this phenomenon. These indicators mainly focus on the changes occurring in certain fields of demographics, communication, and culture. These objective factors, which can be constructed from statistical data and information collected through empirical studies, are mainly concerned with the socio-cultural conditions of the population of destinations and are less suitable for describing visitors and the changes in the society they live in. At the same time, rather little is known about the mental changes generated by involvement in tourism as tourist or host and the way it contributes to or impedes a balanced state of mind. Therefore, we need an adequate index which will allow the comparable assessment of the societal impacts of tourism in a more complex way, in a geographical and chronological context. This will help academic professionals as well as policy and decision makers to start working along new lines. On the one hand, the ideas described in this study are meant to be a contribution to exploring a dimension within the field of research into the quality of life which is considered to be fairly new even in international terms and, above all, to putting this topic into the focus of attention. On the other hand, these ideas support the policy intention arising from the successful implementation of the National Tourism Development Strategy.
