Rezumat:  Attraction Centres of Bihar County in the Middle of the XIX Century. In the western part of the historical Bihar County the gentle forms of the Hungarian Plain dominate in the landscape while in its eastern part the uplands of the Erdély “island” Mountains present the transition towards the higher ranges of the Munţii Gilăului (Gyalui-havasok) and Munţii Metaliferi (Erdélyi Érchegység). This physical geographical duality is reflected in the social geographical framework spatial relationship between the settlements and in the spatial division of labour. The market towns established in the entrances of the river valleys along the boundary between the Plain and the “island” Mountains present a distinct line that separates the western and the eastern parts of the County. In the Plain area the number of the settlements having central functions is higher, the spatial relationships are balanced and the attraction districts are properly definable. In the eastern parts of Bihar County there are more uncertainties considering hierarchy and attraction districts and the application of a different scale of values is required. Bihar County is a transition zone bearing both lowland and highland characters (e.g. population, differences between the areas of attraction districts etc.). The unique relationship between the two areas becomes more and more dominant forming the geographical hinterland of these centres due to the economic dynamism of the towns along the market line. Studying 406 settlements in the historical Bihar County the increase in the central functions was observable by the 1850s that make the investigation of the settlement hierarchy connections and levels possible. All together 60 settlements had some kind of central functions, out of this 60 settlements 27 possessed more than 2 such functions.
