Rezumat: The European integration is a process approached in terms of cooperation and conflict. Starting from the premise that trust is the element on which cooperation is based, while pride leads to conflict, we discuss European integration between these two extremes, for whose relationship Germany provides a relevant study case. We evaluate citizens’ position in respect to national pride, and their trust in the European institutions, in two samples representative, on the one hand, for the general population and, on the other, for the intellectual elite of the university graduates, based on the data provided by the ALLBUS Compact, 1980‐2006 study, conducted on the German population. The study comprises 15 surveys, with 47,947 respondents and 1,250 variables. The methods we have used are correspondence analysis and cluster analysis, by which we have outlined the relationship between national pride, trust in the European institutions, and identification with the European Union. The conclusions of this study can constitute the premises of a comparative analysis, which groups European countries depending on the relationship between national identity and the pace of European integration. >br> Keywords: European integration, Germany, Allbus data, pride, trust |
