Rezumat:  The present paper examines the three patterns of sports coverage in their historical development, in order to emphasize the political, economic and socio-cultural circumstances of their evolution. The distinction between these patterns refers mainly to daily sports coverage. The first pattern, the British one, has as main characteristics the fact that daily sports coverage finds its place within general information newspapers, whereas the second pattern, exemplified here by the French one, but common to the majority of continental Europe and South America, reveals the existence of daily sports newspapers, these being among the most read newspapers in their countries. The third pattern, the German one, constitutes a combination between the first two, as daily sports coverage has its place in general interest newspapers, as it is in Great Britain, but weekly/biweekly magazines, with content that constitutes a hybrid between daily and magazine, complete sports coverage.

Keywords: patterns of sports coverage, sports press, history of sports journalism, sports daily newspapers, sports magazines, history of British, French, German sports print media
