Rezumat:  The extent of environmental and professional exposure to Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn as a result of the industrial activity in the Baia-Mare area was investigated. The environmental exposure was estimated through the metal content in hair samples from five children aged between 7 and 13 years, while the occupational exposure was assessed on 5 adults between 40-70 years. The alert and intervention levels of Cu, Pb and Zn and sometimes Cr in soil were many fold exceeded but in hair only Pb was suited to evaluate the risk to exposure as it was much over the normal value. It has been found an accumulation of Pb in hair with age, but children are a more useful tool for epidemiological assessment of environmental exposure to toxic elements. In high polluted area such as Baia-Mare, the Pb level in hair is less influenced by the distance of the residential zone from polluter and more dependent on people’s age. Results underline the relevance of health care preventive measures for children, who are the most sensitive groups to pollution.
