Rezumat:  Microbiota of Activated and Digested Sludge from the Bistriţa Town Wastewater Treatment Plant. Activated sludge, a common biological treatment method for municipal and industrial wastewater represents a complex microbial community. Population shifts within the microbial community may result from changes in the plant operating conditions. Our research is the first complex analysis of the activated and digested sludge in the Bistriţa wastewater treatment plant. The bacteriological studies focused on the broader effects of the treatment on sludge microbiota. In activated and digested sludge, we determined the number of following bacteria: heterotrophic aerobic, ammonifying, nitrifying, denitrifying, proteolytic, amylolytic and lipolytic. We also determined five bacteriological indicators: the mesophilic heterotrophic bacteria, the total coliform bacteria, the fecal coliform bacteria, the fecal enterococcus and the clostridia. Our data show that all the bacteria in the seven physiological groups were present in a low number in the sludge, probable because of sludge age, high BOD5 value (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) and bulking problems. The numbers recorded for the bacteriological indicators were high in both type of sludge. The anaerobic mesophilic digestion had a better efficiency on total coliforms and fecal coliforms, but the fecal enterococcus and the clostridia were more resistant to this treatment. This data confirm that the mesophilic digestion isn’t a good treatment for sludge disinfecting.
