Rezumat:  Hepatotoxicity of the Honey Bee Venom. Histological and Ultrastructural Study. The honey bee (Apis mellifera) venom, a very potent anti-inflammatory and analgesic drug, has been used for a long time to cure certain arthritic affections and, in addition, nowadays its main ingredients are further tested as possible drugs for some other diseases. In order to investigate the possible hepatotoxicity of the bee venom, aqueous solutions made from pure, dry venom (collected by ourselves) were used for performing the treatments. Our results, including those from previous studies, show that rat envenomation with bee venom, under different experimental conditions, is followed, in a dose-dependent manner, by structural and ultrastructural changes in liver. While the low, 30 day-administered doses of bee venom, caused a lot of important – possibly reversible – changes in liver, including the activation of the mechanisms involved in the organism defense and the cellular detoxification, the higher (lethal) doses determined more severe – irreversible alterations. All those alterations produced in the liver of animals tested for the higher doses of the bee venom (hepatocellular necrosis, disseminated intravascular coagulation etc.), together with structural modifications and functional failure of other different tissues and organs, led to the death of some of the animals in a short time.
