  Rezumat:  The exposure to radon and its decay products represents the most frequent cause for lung cancer, after smoking. The association between radon exposure in dwellings and lung cancer risk has been already known and confirmed by several surveys and pooled analysis of epidemiological studies world-wide. A follow-up study of radon levels has been carried out in 305 houses during 2010-2011, in four villages in Ştei-Băiţa region (Bǎiţa, Nucet, Fînaţe and Cîmpani) located near the old uranium mines in NW part of Romania. About 10% of investigated houses presents in at least one ground floor room values of indoor radon concentration higher than 600 Bq·m−3. Diagnosis of radon sources and higher indoor radon levels was carried out in 20 houses in Ştei-Băiţa region and a pilot house was selected to develops, tests and implements the most effective radon mitigation techniques.
